Chapter 8

Chloe had a temper. She’d always been plagued by a short fuse, and her reaction to the sanctimonious piece of shit who saw her as a commodity to be married off to a conveniently single dragon shifter rankled. She probably shouldn’t have been so blunt. As she replayed her standoff with Eran, she cringed. Only an hour before, she’d recognized the need to suck up her principles if it meant obtaining help for their cause.

How quickly resolutions could crumble.

She listened carefully as Zee synopsized the hell they’d lived through, adding to his recitation in spots. Hearing everything laid out, one grueling incident on top of the next, made her blood run cold. She’d put her head down and done what needed doing by blocking out what had gone before.

Eran’s supercilious expression slipped during Zee’s recitation, traded first for disbelief and then dismay. “That’s quite a tale,” he said after Zee fell silent. “You were right to return to us.”

Yahn narrowed his fog-colored eyes to thoughtful slits. “What you said mirrors what I’ve seen in both my pool and my glass.”

Eran twisted to face him. “Why didn’t you say something?”

Yahn shrugged, the gesture eloquent. “I was waiting.”

“For what?” Chloe spoke up, her tone sharper than she’d meant it to be, but she couldn’t take the words back.

“What else?” he countered. “I was biding my time to see if it would become a problem for us.”

Zachary’s noisy intake of breath was followed by smoke and steam. He got to his feet and strode to where he faced them all. “I’m going to quote Niall, a jaguar shifter, and remind you there is no more us and them. That goes for the shifter mage rift as well as the rift you”—he leveled his gaze at Eran and Yahn—“artificially created between dragon shifters and the rest of our kin.”

“Don’t waste your breath stating the obvious,” Eran growled amid smoke and flames.

“Will you help?” Chloe cut to the chase. If the answer was yes, it was time to craft plans. If the answer was no, she and Zee needed to get back to the group in Silverthorne.

Magic flashed and flared between Eran and Yahn, and she assumed they were communicating. Zee remained where he was, watching the other two men. She caught his eye, and he motioned for her to join him.

She drained the remainder of the mead mixture coating the bottom of her glass, set it down, and walked to Zachary’s side. “We should leave soon,” she murmured. Given a choice between telepathy and quiet speech, she figured she had a better chance not being overheard using the latter.

“I know. Give this a few more minutes.”

She stood easily next to him. Her magic had recovered quickly, probably with an assist from her dragon, and she felt far better than she had when she’d stumbled through the door of the dragons’ stronghold.

“I’d take full credit,” her dragon spoke warmly, “but the drink helped too. It’s formulated specially for dragonkind.”

Gratitude blindsided her, and Chloe sent thanks inward.
